How to write a resume in the AI era
AI can speed up a resume rewrite, but speed is not the same as quality. The strongest modern resume combines machine-assisted editing with evidence only you can supply: what changed because of your work, how large the problem was, and why your choices mattered.

Start with evidence, not a prompt
Before asking an AI resume builder to rewrite anything, collect the facts it cannot infer: team size, scope, deadlines, customers, systems, revenue, adoption, quality, and measurable before-and-after results. A model can improve language; it should not invent proof.
Keep a master record of projects and achievements. For each one, note the problem, your action, the tools or judgment involved, and the outcome. That source material gives AI something truthful to shape.
- Record exact metrics and their time period
- Separate team outcomes from your direct contribution
- Save job descriptions alongside each tailored version
Use AI as an editor
Ask for a specific transformation: tighten a summary, turn notes into achievement bullets, identify missing evidence, or align established experience with a target role. Review every claim before using it.
Good AI assistance preserves your meaning while improving clarity. If the result sounds polished but could describe thousands of candidates, restore the concrete nouns, decisions, constraints, and outcomes that make it yours.
Tailor for the role without copying
A job description is a map of employer priorities, not text to paste into your resume. Match its language where the experience is real. If a requirement is missing, either add related evidence or leave it out rather than manufacturing a match.
The goal is a document that is readable by an applicant tracking system and persuasive to a human. Use conventional headings, simple formatting, relevant keywords, and accomplishment-led writing.
- Mirror truthful terminology
- Lead with the most relevant evidence
- Keep important context visible to a fast reader
- Export and inspect the final PDF
The final review is still human
Read the resume aloud. Check dates, tense, ownership, metrics, links, and formatting. Then ask whether the first half of the first page makes the target role obvious. AI can propose; you remain accountable for the document.
