A resume summary formula that avoids generic AI copy
A resume summary should orient the reader, not repeat the entire document. In three or four lines, establish the work you do, the scale you know, the strengths relevant to the role, and one credible pattern of impact.
Use four ingredients
Start with the target function and level. Add relevant scope, such as years, industries, customers, team size, or system scale. Name two or three role-specific strengths. Close with a pattern of outcomes you can prove below.
- Function and level
- Relevant scope
- Differentiating strengths
- Evidence-backed impact
Remove phrases anyone could claim
Phrases such as results-driven, dynamic professional, proven track record, and excellent communicator consume space without distinguishing you. Replace them with the result, environment, or decision that demonstrates the trait.
Tailor without keyword stuffing
Use a few central terms from the job description when they match your experience. A product manager might foreground experimentation and roadmap ownership for one role, then platform strategy and developer experience for another.
- Keep it under roughly 80 words
- Write in plain language
- Do not list every technology
- Make every claim traceable to experience
Edit the AI draft
If AI returns a smoother version that says nothing new, ask it to identify missing evidence instead of paraphrasing again. A useful recommendation should increase relevance, precision, or clarity—not merely rotate synonyms.
